Man, I know just what Marten's talking about with that scene where Judge Doom sticks the cartoon shoe in the Dip. I don't burst out in tears, but I want to. Mostly I just can't look. Something about the oh god please no of she shoe's expression always hits me so hard and I have to hide my eyes and try not to listen.

some babblings on Iran, semi-courtesy of
ontd_political.
The man, who has come from a small town in the eastern province of Khorasan and has never been in Tehran before, says he is being paid 2m rial (£1220) to assault protestors with a heavy wooden stave.
Besides all the D: of the tragedy, this is pretty surreal for me because that's comparable to my salary (slightly less) for cataloging books. I'm not even quite sure what's giving my brain the hiccups; possibly just the huge contrast between our, ah, job duties which are apparently rewarded with similar wages (albeit I'm sure that kind of money buys a lot more in Iran than it does in California). Please note that on or around July 15, 2009, AT&T will no longer be offering access to the Usenet netnews service. If you wish to continue reading Usenet newsgroups, access is available through third-party vendors.
Posted only internally to AT&T Usenet Servers.
!(*&^@#! I know I'm, like, the only person who still wants Usenet </sarcasm>, but still. This has been a feature of every ISP I've had since, uh, ever, or less hyperbolically, at least I knew what Usenet was.
BAH!
Any suggestions? I don't want to have to rely on Google Groups, even for the few newsgroups I read.

WTH weather? I was confused enough when it splattered rain on and off and there was a lightning stroke as I was driving
Trust me, this is not normal for us. This is not a time of year we get four days of rain predicted; June through October or November are generally dry and it's rare even to have a late straggler of a light shower this late in the year. And thunderstorms are unusual period, because usually when it's wet here, it's too cold to also foster thunder conditions. Occasionally we will get one in a severe winter storm, but it's rare. We don't have four days in a row thought likely to have thunderstorms. We just don't, especially not in early summer.
Climate change, wot?

Pretty much all I can say about this is "...lolwut?"

NB, although it was only $7 I did not purchase it and drink it, so I can't tell you how it was. Given its shelf neighbours, it stood a good chance of being basically blue-tinted Corona, and while I like Corona okay with spicy food on a hot day, in this case it seemed silly to bother.

I am currently sipping Douglas Fir eau de vie* mixed with elderflower liqueur (St. Germain), thinned with a little water. The eau de vie is green (naturally green, that is) and the liqueur is pale gold; the water made the mixture "louche" a little, so the overall visual effect is like a weak absinthe. It tastes, well, sort of like you might think: herbal, sweet, and flowery. All things considered, I feel kind of like I am having a more-fey-than-thou moment.
The eau de vie was a pricey gamble which fortunately turned out not to be basically upscale PineSol, as I feared it might. It does have that piney-fresh sort of evergreen flavour, but it's subtle and it doesn't assault your eyes and sinuses like the vaguely similiar flavours in gin. (Not that I dislike gin, but it doesn't play well with many others.)
* Most elvish-sounding distilled spirit evar or what?

I died and am dead. I recommend that you go die as well. But, uh, not in the way that Spock meant for the Vulcan Science Academy guy to go die. I mean, like, metaphorically and comedically and stuff. Fatal hilarity. Or something.

I've been perusing PDF's I made of my old high school zine Lucida 10 as I combine them into one-PDF-per-issue rather than one-per-page (and the scans are kind of bad, too; I can only assume I must have saved them as PDF from Photoshop at a time years ago when I didn't also have Acrobat and didn't know about PDF stitching software), and came across this perplexing little dedication in the masthead of issue 3:
This issue of Lucida 10 is dedicated to the memory of Lisa (Wh. Wiz) and Mike (Bl. Wiz), who turned themselves to stone, and Miranda and Morrey, who got fried by Nyarlathotep.
The part about Miranda and Morrey, although I don't remember this specific instance, is almost certainly a reference to a game of Call of Cthulhu, which we played a lot of in high school. (Miranda, I think, was Sarah's character's name. Morrey was probably one of the guys, Mike, Aaron, or Ehren most likely since Jeff was the gamemaster -- what do they call it in CoC -- "Keeper"?)
The first part is what is confusing me. On one level it is obviously (at least, nowadays I think it is obvious; at the time I wasn't into console RPGs in the slightest) referring to Final Fantasy IV where the twin kids Palom and Porom (black mage and white mage) do this to save the rest of the party's asses. I think it might still be referring to a Cthulhu game, in which I suppose my character and Mike's character got petrified for some reason (probably shortly before Nyarlathotep did his frying), and either at the time or after the fact someone made a Final Fantasy reference out of it. Or it might be the case that someone had an FFIV game going and had either renamed the characters thusly (can you do that in IV? I forget) or they were getting so referred to (why?) among the group of people watching the playing (which probably included me, although the game apparently made no impression on my brain).
In short, I really no longer know what's going on there. It's a part of my history simply lost to memory. Nor can I fathom why I would choose to write it into the masthead (aside from the major crush I had on Michael).
